Today, Nintendo announced the creation of Project Sora, a new subsidiary to be headed by Masahiro Sakurai, the creator of Kirby and Super Smash Bros., and will create a new game under his direction.
Officially formed on January 22, it has capital of 200 million yen, 72% by Nintendo, with Sakurai's studio Sora Ltd. and other third parties covering the rest. Sakurai will be the president of the new company.
Today, a website was opened by Nintendo and Sora where they ask for 3D programmers, map production staff, sound effect staff and game planners to begin work by early May for a project planned to be completed two years from now. In an interview section (written in Japanese), Nintendo president Satoru Iwata says the project is "A new experiment, both for Mr. Sakurai and for Nintendo." Sakurai, while not being able to talk about the content of the project, says that "We've started a special project. We're not sure how it will sell or if it will be accepted. Our goal is not just to make a single game. We can promise that you'll be able to experience something different." The project is expected to target core game players, and apart from that, there are no details on the platform or what the content of this will be.
